Orford castle is an
important castle dating from Norman times, it was once a
valuable deterrent on the east Suffolk coast against the regular
threat of invasion.
Orford itself was once quite an important port until during
the middle ages when the harbour began to silt up.
Obviously after this happened then its importance started to
decrease. The castle keep is in a reasonable state of
repair, but the curtain wall that once surrounded it as all but
disappeared.
We visited the castle during August 2001. The castle is
now in the hands of English Heritage. |
