GRIMES GRAVES

We visited Grimes Graves on the last Sunday of August 2001. Grimes Graves are stone age flint mines, and are to be found in the middle of Thetford forest in Nolfork.  The photograph is taken from the bottom of one of the excavated pits at about 30 metres below ground level.  There are around 300 of these pits in this area.  The landscape resembles a lunar surface in some respects.

The land is looked after by English heritage, and although there is only one pit that is accessible the surrounding area with the forest makes it well worth a visit.
